Today’s article is all about how to plant trees in your yard for less money.
Did you know that by adding a tree to your yard, you can increase your property value and save on energy costs? But maybe the cost or your lack of a green thumb is holding you off. No worries since there are some great programs in the Fresno area that can help!
Why Trees Help Your Home
- Trees boost curb appeal. The presence of larger trees in yards and as street trees can add 3 to 15 percent to home values throughout neighborhoods.
- Trees can shade buildings, windows and air-conditioning units. Homes with well-situated trees can reduce air conditioning needs by 30 percent and save 20 to 50 percent in heating costs.
- Trees can shade your outdoor entertaining space, which is crucial for our grueling summers.
- Trees can help with water drainage. This is a huge plus for many of us who have hard clayey soil that is not permeable and water tends to accumulate during rainy time.
Planting Programs for Homeowners – Tree Fresno
You guessed it, Tree Fresno is all about advocating for more trees in Fresno area to help improve our air quality. You have the opportunity to apply to receive a tree for free through the Adopt a Tree program for your own yard! Or if you’d like to get more involved in the community, you can apply to plant trees on park strips within City of Fresno. There are also a lot of information this organization provides to help you learn more about trees in our area as well as properly caring for them.
Local Nurseries
There are a few nurseries that are family owned and operated and I refer them to my family and friends all the time. Not only do they grow the trees themselves, but they encourage the types of trees that are native to our area and suitable for the environment, usually drought tolerant so you don’t break your bank trying to keep them happy.
Most of these nurseries have been around for a long time and they often have great recommendations on what you wish to achieve with your trees. My favorites are Sierra View Nursery and Evergreen Garden Center. Take a stroll sometime!
Keep a look out for any local community tree programs that might offer reduced-priced trees native to your area. Sometimes these events can be held once a year and include help with planting and how-to’s on tree care.
Many groups are concerned with the tree canopy in certain neighborhoods and want to help homeowners plant trees.
Happy planting!
